ArcGIS Runtime 10.2.4 will start rolling out at the end of this month and will include some great new SDKs (.NET!), APIs, and developer workflows. But this release is a little different than previous ones.

Playing fair—For the past few years, we’ve been striving for consistency across the Runtime SDKs. A new feature gets added to one SDK, it gets added to all. However, current demands across the ArcGIS Runtime platforms have diverged, so….

Playing favorites—So now we’re playing favorites, but only for the 10.2.4 release. Different Runtime SDKs will have different enhancements this release (see the list below), but this is only to ensure we meet the disparate user requests across platforms. Most of these capabilities are sneak peeks into what’s coming to the other Runtime SDKs at the next release, which means in the next phase, ArcGIS Runtime is…

Playing catch-up!—The plan is to sync up the SDKs again at the next release, most likely early in 2015.

Our long term mission for consistency across SDKs is still the game plan!

Runtime .NET SDK

10.2.4 is the production-ready release of the new .NET SDK for building native ArcGIS apps for Windows Desktop, Windows Store, and Windows Phone. Notable improvements include support for offline and sync-enabled editing workflows, direct read of shapefiles, and client-side labeling.  The SDK includes a set of Visual Studio and Blend application and item templates to get you started.  In addition, a new deployment experience is integrated with Visual Studio and enables you to select resources and components for your application.

Runtime Android SDK

Runtime Android SDK has focused on a few crucial areas which will be coming to all platforms at the next release:

  • Local vector data support (SHP, GPK, KML)
  • Local raster data visualization
  • Raster analysis functions (in beta for the release)
  • FeatureLayer and FeatureServiceTable – more parity with the ArcGISFeatureLayer
  • Support for tables, connected queries, and related queries
  • Definition expressions on FeatureLayers
  • Ownership-based access and editor tracking
  • New WMTS layer
  • Early access preview of Android Studio support
  • Lots of other bug fixes and performance enhancements

Runtime iOS & OS X SDK

  • Due to Apple’s release schedule, be sure to keep and eye on the blog about the Runtime OS X SDK release as it relates to Apple’s OS X Yosemite and Swift. Even though Swift is in GM, Apple is expected to release xCode 6.1 this fall with the final of OS X Yosemite.
  • Support for dynamic layers in ArcGIS dynamic map service layers allows you to customize map images
  • Web map enhancements
  •              Dynamic layers, image service layers, image service popups, refresh interval
  • Support for Swift for iOS, Xcode 6, iOS 8 and also support for the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
  • Bug fixes and performance enhancements
  • Map gesture and keyboard interaction enhancements on OS X

Runtime Java SDK

Runtime Java SDK has also focused on a few crucial areas which will be coming to all platforms at the next release:

  • Local vector data support (SHP, GPK, KML)
  • Local raster data visualization
  • FeatureLayer and FeatureServiceTable – more parity with the ArcGISFeatureLayer
  • Support for tables, connected queries, and related queries
  • Definition expressions on FeatureLayers
  • Ownership-based access and editor tracking
  • New WMTS layer
  • Added JavaFX map support in beta
  • Bug fixes and performance enhancements

Runtime Qt SDK

Qt will not have a 10.2.4 release; the team is working on 10.3 beta, which will include the QML cross-platform capability. The addition of QML API to the Runtime Qt SDK will allow you to quickly build ArcGIS apps for multiple platforms with a single code base. Developers wanting to create cross platform apps will love the beta coming up to target iOS, Android and Mac as well.
